Q.
What is Chess Vision Trainer?
A. Chess Vision
Trainer is a chess training program to improve your
visualization and move calculation skills in Chess.
It uses a chess-playing engine that acts as your playing
partner. The position displayed on the chess board is
not the true position but the position a certain number
of half-moves before the true position. You do not decide
the moves based on the displayed position but based
on the true position (which you do not see but you are
trying to visualize). This means that you are always
forced to look ahead of the chess position you see in
the board. In addition, there is the concept of 'Blindfold
Areas' which are quadrants of the chess board where
the pieces are invisible. This
idea of dividing the chess board into quadrants for
the purpose of visualization is revealed by Buckley
in his excellent book Practical Chess Analysis.
|
Q.
Will this improve my visualization and calculation skills
when I play using a real chess board (over-the-board or
OTB)?
A. Yes. In fact, this is the area where
Chess Vision Trainer is most helpful. We like to suggest
that you use a real chess board side by side with the
program. Set-up the position you see in the graphical
board in the program into the real chess board and make
the move as the program moves. Then you have to calculate
your next move looking at the your real chess board.
Practice makes perfect! Start with 2 half-moves deep
and gradually increase the depth when you become comfortable
with the current depth. Use one blindfold quadrant at
a time. Concentrate your training in the quadrant where
you most often make blunders.
|
Q.
I feel I wanted to stop my training. Using the software
burns me out in the long-run. What do you suggest?
A. This is the area where no one can
help you but yourself. You have to motivate yourself
to continue training. Think about what you can achieve
if you can think like the masters! Don't push yourself
too hard at first. Try to have a pace that is comfortable
for you. Most users find 15 to 30 minute session per
day as comfortable.
|
Q.
Why can't I drag the pieces?
A. The position in the visible chess
board is not the true current position but the position
a number of half-moves prior to the true current position.
Because of this, it is not possible to implement the
drag-and-drop function for the pieces. To make a move,
you have to click the source square and the click the
destination square. You know that the square is selected
when it is bordered by a red rectangle. To cancel the
selection of a square, just click the selected square
again.
|
Q.
What are those game.001, game.002 files created in the
application folder?
A. Those are temporary files used by
the chess engine. You can safely delete those files
if you want.
